Getting Closer to Krakow, Poland

Our first day of the study tour is all about getting closer to Krakow, Poland. Accompanied by the drizzling rain and the air fragrant with fresh grass, 14 of us set off to Poland's oldest and one of the most influential universities - Jagiellonian University in Krakow with Professor Bozena Mierzejewska to have 2 lectures of the day.

The first lecture was given by Marta Shaw, the associate professor in institution of Public Affairs in Jagiellonian, who introduced Poland from historical, cultural and societal aspects. Professor Marek Kucia, from Institution of Sociology, gave the second lecture talking about Poland in the European Union. From Polish "May Flower Day" to regaining the country land; from WWII to Post Communism Transformation and becoming a member of EU, we were led to walking through the fascinating Polish history. We also learnt two very polish yet untranslatable words for one more step towards a better understanding of Polish culture.

After an amazing late lunch in the Old Town - Chlopskie Jadlo, a very cozy traditional Polish restaurant, we followed a city guide to have a nice walk around Krakow. We explored the Old Town through the Royal Route with an amazing view, the Main Market Square with a scent of clove, 3 beautiful major Catholic churches, Wawel Hill with the Royal Castle which is hugged by the city's river Wisla. Followed by a fantastic dinner in the Old Town - Miod Malina, our Poland Study Tour's first day is getting to an end. I definitely feel becoming closer not only to Poland, to Krakow, but also to each members of the group in this wonderful journey and I cannot wait for tomorrow!

Dobranoc!
